Working with schools to raise the achievement of minority ethnic pupils

The English Language Support Service (ELSS) supports the particular needs of:

  • Pupils for whom English is an additional language (EAL)
  • Schools with minority ethnic pupils at risk of under-achieving
  • Refugees and asylum seekers

We offer

  • Pupil support for pupils of statutory school age who are new to English
  • Teacher support for more advanced learners
  • Advice and guidance to staff in Early Years settings
  • Early Years pupil support for individuals at particular risk of under-achievement
  • School development work re: racial equality and pupil achievement
  • Centre and school-based in-service training
  • Some bilingual support available
  • Community language GCSE entry support
  • Help with work placements and FE entry for EAL pupils
  • Home/school liaison
  • Inter-agency liaison for supported pupils
  • Guidance on working with minority ethnic families
  • Community consultation and liaison
  • Advice re: translating and interpreting services
  • Multilingual resources
