  • Date: Wednesday 24 October 2007, 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Venue: Cobholm and Lichfield Heath Resource Centre, Pasteur Road, Great Yarmouth
  • Price: Free
  • Programme: The workshop will deal with the importance of civic engagement for BME communities. It will examine this issue by looking at the challenges and achievements of the past, linking them to those that face us today and in the future. Workshop will be delivered by Dr. Richard Maguire, historian, researcher and lecturer for the Norwich and Norfolk Racial Equality Council (NNREC) Hidden Heritage project. This project has established that Norfolk had many historic links with transatlantic slavery, with some the county's inhabitants actively supporting and participating in the tragedy of slavery, while others fought against it.

Critical in the struggle against slavery, and the ultimate victory over the system, were the actions of BME communities linked to the county. Historical activities can be linked to present-day actions which tackle racism and aim to eliminate discrimination. Civic engagement is an important element in the struggle towards equity and justice for all. The important role played by BME communities, both in the past and present, will be better understood through the outcomes of the workshop and the unveiling of Norfolk's Hidden Heritage.
