Children & Families
African Rhyme Time
- Rhyme Times for pre-school children take place regularly in libraries around the county. They
are a great way of involving babies and young children in the fun and exciting worlds of words, books, rhythms and rhymes. For Black History Month, we are expanding our repertoire to include African themed action rhymes and stories within the usual format.
Please come along and learn and enjoy with us. (All children must be accompanied by an adult). Various dates throughout BHM
Kwanzaa – a Celebration of Family, Community & Culture
- Kwanzaa is a celebration which is based on the first harvest festivities of Africa from which it takes its name – "matunda ya kwanza" means "first fruits" in Swahili, the most widely spoken African language. Created in the 1960s in the USA by Dr Maulena Karenga, a Black Studies professor and community activist, Kwanzaa aims to keep positive African values and traditions alive around the world.
Enjoy, learn more about this Pan African Festival and make Kwanzaa gifts for your friends and family! There'll be quizzes, stories and music, and some sessions will feature a drumming workshop.
