BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2006 Writing Competition

Following last year's success, Creative Arts East will once again be running a postcard writing competition for Black History Month 2006. The picture on the postcard symbolises Gloria Ojulari-Sule's response to the complex histories of Black people in Britain and we're inviting participants to use the image to celebrate these histories by writing a poem or prose piece on the back of the postcard.

There will be three age categories: under 12, under 18 and over 18. The competition will be actively promoted through schools, libraries and other community groups. 5000 postcards are being distributed throughout Norfolk, and are available from the World Shop on Exchange Street and from Sarah Bower at Creative Arts East.

Please send your poem or prose to Sarah Bower at Creative Arts East, Griffin Court, 6 Market Street, Wymondham. The closing date for the competition is 2nd October.

The competition will be judged by award winning poet, Jackie Kay. Jackie will also be holding a workshop based around the postcards in the Norwich Millennium Library on Saturday, October 14th. On Saturday evening she will be reading at Café Writers where she will announce the postcard competition winners, and they will have the opportunity of reading their winning entries in front of an audience.

Last years winning poems are now available to read online at:
