BHM 2007 Creative Writing Competition
NB: Image of postcard to follow when available
Creative Arts East are once again be running a postcard writing competition for Black History Month. The images on the postcards for this year's competition show quilts made by the Norwich Society of Friends to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in England.
The legend of the "Quilt Code" is that various geometric patterns commonly found in American patchwork quilts were used to convey messages of assistance in connection with the Underground Railroad.
Whether the Quilt code is fact or fiction, it does not diminish the incredible courage, guts, and individual determination the journey to freedom required. Bearing this in mind, we’d like you write a poem or prose piece about an event, moment or person from Black History that has inspired you. There will be prizes in 3 age categories.
Postcards can be picked up from your local library and from the World Shop in Exchange street. Please note the postcard is also the entry form. All entries must be submitted by October 26.
