Young Urbanites

Aims and objectives

Young Urbanites is a recently formed Norwich based community group that has specialised in working with young people that are close to exclusion from the school system, and socially excluded youth. Such young people are often vulnerable, mistrusting and close to becoming involved in a life of crime, drugs or both.

We provide services for young people, which raise their awareness of youth related issues by using a variety of social inclusion workshops and self-development programmes that incorporate a range of youth culture interests such as music, dance, fashion and video.

We are a multi-disciplinary team with professional skills and experience in education support work, drug education training, working with disaffected young people, and those from BME backgrounds.

We offer specialist knowledge in drug awareness and youth specific issues to the fellow professionals who staff the institutions, agencies, and charitable organisations that work with young people.

The role of Young Urbanites is that of an educator, acting as a guide and mentor to help identify, nurture and develop interests and talents that many young people are unaware that they have.

Many organisations that work with young people realise that a way to attract disaffected youth is through projects and activities that incorporate youth culture interests. However, Young Urbanites has recognised that these ventures often lack the expertise to deal with the social issues that affect such young people, offer no accreditation, and do not prepare them for work.

Utilising the same mediums Young Urbanites has developed programmes that offer young people something more substantial, whilst educating them in important social issues.

In coalition with Drug Action Teams (DAT), the National Healthy Schools Standard (NHSS), schools and education services Young Urbanites offer drug awareness training for teachers, provide young people an important social education, accredited life skills programmes, and vocational training opportunities that improve their employment options and life chances.
